History
Ambassador James K Penfield retired to this beautiful part of the world after 35 years as a career diplomat travelling the world in the US Foreign Service.
His aunt was a Sloan; one of the founding pioneer families of Longbranch, who came out from Tacoma in 1891 to enjoy summers “in the country”.
Having sat on a long Madrona branch that arched out over the water when he was seven years old, Ambassador Penfield returned here to finish his days in Madrone Lodge, the house he built to celebrate this spot he loved.
Madronita, a house built in the 1930’s, was a second, more traditionally built house in which he welcomed the many foreign visitors who came to consult him about foreign (particularly Chinese) affairs.
Beachwood is a smaller cabin that was built by Ambassador Penfield’s uncle to provide a sunlight and fresh air cabin for a family invalid. Its view and atmosphere has provided inspiration to artists of all kinds over the last twenty years.
His family hope that others may now enjoy this part of the world as much as they all do.
